(1) Fic 1 of 2 of the children will listen series:

Title/Link: Forgotten Language
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] faerialchemist
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character(s): Kanna, Hama, Kaya, Katara, Hakoda
Media: Fic
Rating: Teen and Up
Word count: 2863
Summary: Nida paused. A smile twitched at the corners of her lips. “Well… There has always been more to bending than sheer ability.” She kissed the top of Kanna’s head, earning a delighted giggle from her daughter. “Would you like to know the most important rule?” Kanna sat up, nodding eagerly. “Yes!”
“To speak the language of the waters…” Her mother winked at her. “The first thing you must do is listen.”

Notes: First of two fics in the series, which explores waterbending as a language, the damage of war, and the process of healing. This prequel centers Kanna (aka Gran Gran), her departure from the Northern Water Tribe and her pending arranged marriage to Pakku, her arrival in the Southern Water Tribe, and her relationships with Hama, Kya, Hakoda, and Katara. It's angst, of course, and touches on backstory we see in the show itself and how that has affected Kanna and in turn her mother and granddaughter. (2) Fic 2 of 2:

Title/Link: Mother Tongue
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] faerialchemist
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character(s): Katara, Kya, Kanna, Sokka, Aang, Pakku
Media: Fic
Rating: Teen and Up
Word count: 2919
Summary: “I love you, too, my dear.” Kanna exhales a shaky breath. “I’d never forgive myself if you don’t… if you left without knowing that.” Katara doesn’t miss her grandmother’s change of phrase. Kanna’s unspoken words are a truth, an ice in her veins Katara has tried so very hard to ignore. This might be goodbye.”

Notes: Second fic in this series and a Katara-centric companion piece to the fic above. It takes place pre-canon and continues through the series and past it, when Katara returns to the Southern Water Tribe after the war. The author has tagged for content, so check those out for any warnings.
