She's never liked to color within the borders. She makes big, garish streaks on the pages of her new coloring book as her father watches over her, smiling. He has heard many parents scold their kids for wasting paper and ink, but he knows his daughter wastes nothing of importance. She is not wasting anything now. Instead she is cultivating her imagination, drawing as he hopes she will live -- on her own terms.

She pauses and looks up at him. Curiosity shines in her big, brown eyes as she watches him watching her. But then she literally shrugs, takes the biggest, thickest crayon in the box, and begins making huge, bright streaks.

"She'll be fine, Mister O'Neil."

"I know." Still he watches. It's a shade of such bright neon yellow that again, he knows other parents would fuss. They might even tease her about blinding them, but to Kirby, it's beautiful.

He slips into his big jacket and picks up his briefcase. He wishes he could stay, but duty calls. He has to make a living to support his baby girl, and if he has anything to say about it, her possibilities in the future will be as endless as her imagination. She's making some kind of strange blend on the paper with two colors, a green and a brown. He wonders what she's drawing but doesn't want to impede. He doesn't want to make her concentrate too much on her choices but only to follow her heart instead.

He leans down and kisses her forehead. "I've got to dash, love, or I'll be late to the station."

"Have a good day, Daddy." She barely looks up. She's put down both crayons and picked up a third. Now she's dotting the brown and green creature she made with big, purple blobs.

He chuckles to himself before running out the door, not seeing the connection she then proceeds to make between the green and yellow. April smiles as she makes the creatures she's invented hold hands. It's as though they are in love or dancing. She doesn't know which, but she does know that she likes what she's made.

As her father hurries to work on securing her future, April looks at the drawing she's created and wonders. She wonders if there's anyone who really looks like this green and brown creatures. She wonders what it's like to hold a man's hand in a romantic fashion. She wonders what it's like to be loved and want to kiss and dance and what her own future will be like.

There's a man out there for her. He may not look like the one she just made, but there is a man out there for her just as her father was here for her mother. Tears fill April's eyes, and she moves to making a new drawing. She remembers her mother only vaguely. She's not a part of her future, but her future will be bright, her father swears as he works hard.
