Halfamoon day 3 - luck
Feb. 3rd, 2019 04:27 pmTitle: Taking Back Control
Luck should never be a thing that factors into a tactician's decision, much less something they grow to rely on. Probability, yes, that's something you can calculate and, with some forward planning, control. If you've predicted all the factors correctly, or better yet, if you've decided them, then luck shouldn't factor into it.
It doesn't really help her right now, though. She's already made the mistake, and now she's wandering through the desert, unsure how the hell she even got there (or, more importantly, where the hell the rest of the squad ended up when that incompetent mage's teleportation spell went wrong). It just so happens that another party of lost wanderers, down on their luck, are in this same spot in the vast desert, ready to give her shelter, food and water, in exchange for at least some tactical direction where before they had none. Even more incredible, one of their party just happens to be a noblewoman of Sacae. She's got that feeling she's going to be drawn into something even larger than the last nightmare she was trying to retreat from.
Assuming, of course, this even is a matter of luck, and someone isn't messing with her. A teleportation can be deliberately sabotaged and redirected. Presumably this Lyndis woman didn't get into her situation through blind chance - there was a lot going on all over Elibe right now and they almost certainly share at least some enemies in Bern who can hire powerful mages.
The thought of being at the mercy of an enemy makes her shiver even more than that of relying on chance. She snarled, resolving to turn her fear into wrath that she could direct at that enemy. If she wasn't in control right now, she had to get back in control wherever she could, as fast as possible.
"Do as I say and I swear I can get us out of here alive," she told the chieftain's daughter and her two retainers.
