Here are some recs from Yuletide featuring awesome female characters. Fandoms include -

Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson
Covert Affairs -
Warehouse 13,
Warehouse 13/Brave
Lost Girl
Despicable Me
Elementary
Firefly, Firefly/Fairy tales and related fandoms
The Life of Saint Margaret of Antioch (Medieval Saint's Life)

Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson

On the Founding of a Nation-State, or What Happened Next (4297 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Diamond Age - Neal Stephenson
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Nell (Diamond Age), Miranda (Diamond Age), John Percival Hackworth, Carl Hollywood, The Mouse Army
Summary:

In which a city is founded, a Princess returns in triumph, and arrangements are made for the rebuilding of the Land Beyond.

This is my Yuletide gift and I couldn't be more delighted with the insight into what happened next. The very special thing about the fic is the look into the workings of the Mouse Army, while putting faces and individuality to the young women.

Covert Affairs

Roll of the Dice (3472 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Covert Affairs
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joan Campbell/Lena Smith
Characters: Joan Campbell, Lena Smith, Auggie Anderson, Annie Walker (Covert Affairs)
Summary:

Joan learned a lot from Lena Smith.

More than just a Bechdel winner. The mystery author has written canon Joan/Lena backstory here as far as I'm concerned. It not only fills the past but informs the present. I love her view of younger Joan. She did a fantastic job with the tough character of Lena, bringing details about her to life, without disrupting the mystery.

Warehouse 13, Warehouse 13/Brave

To End All Wars (4890 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Warehouse 13
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Irene Frederic/Helena "H.G." Wells
Characters: Irene Frederic, Helena "H. G." Wells, William Wolcott
Summary:

Paris, 1920. H.G. Wells is unexpectedly awoken to assist in a Warehouse emergency: new Caretaker Irene Frederic is missing.

I don't even know how to start about how amazing the fic is. The author drops us and the characters into post-WW1 Paris seamlessly. We learn of Irene's struggles in becoming the new caretaker with a wonderful look at young Irene. HG's story is fleshed out more. The encounter of Irene and HG is absolutely perfect, suiting both characters. Beyond that a Bechdel Winner.

Where Bear? (2224 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Warehouse 13, Brave (2012)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Myka Bering/Helena "H. G." Wells
Characters: Myka Bering, Helena "H. G." Wells, Pete Lattimer
Summary:

"Why are we freezing our asses off in Scotland? In the middle of winter?" Pete's voice was tinny on the Farnsworth. He was shivering, even with the shearling cap jammed on his head and the wool coat pulled tight around his neck.

"Because Claudia got a ping from an archaeological expedition working out here," said Myka. She shared a look with H.G. "And because we don't want anyone else running off into the Scottish highlands because demon bears are chasing them."

Happy fusion of Brave into Warehouse 13 with fitting epilogue for Merida. It's a great look at how Myka and HG resolve their own doubts and the history between them.

Lost Girl

A Staggering Work of Astonishing Brilliance! (9293 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Lost Girl
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Kenzi (Lost Girl)
Summary:

"You're writing a book?" Hale looked dubious. Very dubious, especially with the eyebrows. "You, Kenzi? Writing a book?"

Kenzi poked him hard between the ribs. "Of course I'm writing a book. I am a literary genius with a unique perspective on paranormal romance." That last word didn't end up sounding the way it was supposed to. She was probably drunk too.

"A unique perspective?" Ciara, bless her fairy heart, was trying very hard.

Kenzi took another swig of beer. Or was it grog? It might be grog. "I am probably the only human on the planet who knows what it's like to have wolf junk." It was probably grog.

"What?" Dyson looked like somebody had just punched him in the gut but he wasn't covered in all of those abs to protect him from it. His eyes were very, very wide. It was hilarious.

"What?" Hale did not seem to understand. Kenzi turned and pointed at Dyson, waggling her eyebrows suggestively.

"Wolf junk," she said. Then held out her stein for a refill.

This is complete fun and not just because Kenzi gets revenge on Twilight and those gray books for all of us ;-)

Despicable Me

Little Soldier (3660 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Despicable Me (2010)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Margo (Despicable Me), Agnes (Despicable Me), Gru's Mother, Original Female Character, Original Male Character
Summary:

Fake Santa has kidnapped Edith and Margo goes to Gran for help.

It's a delight to watch a young heroine in action and that's what Margo is. She goes to Gran for help and gets an education along the way - a complete Bechdel winner.

Elementary

Practice (1333 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Elementary (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Joan Watson (Elementary), Sherlock Holmes
Summary:

Working with Sherlock isn't changing Joan as much as he might think.

*

Spoilers through 1x10.

Fantastic character study of Joan.

Firefly, Firefly/Fairy tales and related fandoms

Stuck in Orbit (4324 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms, Firefly
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sleeping Beauty - Character, River Tam
Summary:

Aurora and River were roommates at the Academy. After Aurora helps Simon gets River out, Aurora is punished. Now, its River's turn to repay the favor.

Fairy tale character is updated into the Firefly universe in a fitting way that continues the fairy tale feel and also puts River in that universe. If you're a fan of the way Once Upon a Time works, this is the kind of story for you.

The Life of Saint Margaret of Antioch (Medieval Saint's Life)
aka the oldest of old-school fandoms

The Life of Saint Margaret of Antioch (The Hundred Thousand Maidens Remix) (1723 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Life of Saint Margaret of Antioch (Medieval Saint's Life)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Saint Margaret of Antioch, various cameos
Summary:

Her name is Margaret. She tells a story.

(Note on warnings: if it happens in the original canon, it happens here.)

Not so much a fic about Margaret, but of women in history and how their stories evolve and inspire.
