Friends,
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
Personally I'm the kind of fan who always roots for the underdog, and there are many female characters who fill that role, and even more of them fill that role in fandom. This post is for people who want to fan the hell out of their unappreciated women and do it as loud as they can. It works like this:
1. Start a thread and put the character's name and the canon they come from in the subject line.
2. Those who love the character comment on the thread with squee, thoughts, fic/art/vid recs, picspams, essays, links and everything they can think of. Make sure your character gets all the love and the attention she deserves.
3. If a character has a thread and you want to talk about her, comment to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.
4. Focus on the love. This is an all positivity, all time post. Embrace your happy!
5. Absolutely no bashing allowed. Please avoid making negative comparisons to other characters, other character types and "well this character sucks more!" kind of comments. Those characters and character types have their fans too and hey, it's a love post. Save negativity for other things.
ETA:
5b. No bashing actresses or the other versions of the character either. Keep in mind that mileages vary and what doesn't work for you may work for someone else.

In other words, this post is all about celebrating and loving our favorite unloved women. Now, love away!
Note: So for some reason there seems to be spontaneous comment screening going on in this post. I'll be unscreening everything I see, but poke me if I miss something!
Susan Pevensie, Narnia
Date: 2011-02-10 09:21 pm (UTC)Ok. Susan. I'm putting her here as she was "unpopular" with Lewis himself. I think in fandom, probably because she was so terribly treated by him, she's generally accepted as awesome (but I'm new to Narnia fandom so I may be wrong). In any case, here is why I think she's great, and why I am embarking on an analysis of her and, eventually, a short story. But more about that later.
- She is sensible. This will become her downfall in Lewis' eyes, as she chooses sensible...ness (rationality I guess) over belief (in Prince Caspian she chooses the more sensible route instead of blindly following Lucy's dream of where Aslan wanted them to go). I believe this is also why she loses faith later on - as what sensible (and sane) person still believes in a fantasy world they played in as children (just my interpretation, that she had to deny this to remain sane, but she's still awesome even if you think different).
- She is intelligent.
- She is a brilliant shot with a bow and arrow, I think the best we encounter in all the Narnia books.
- She is brave and will fight if necessary.
- She is gentle and empathetic.
- She is loyal and protective of her family.
- She is beautiful.
- She is aware of who she is.
There are countless other reasons, but I shall leave them to you to list further! I have no reccs as of yet, apart from the awesome fanmix by snacky (here: http://community.livejournal.com/snackbites/5257.html). The only other thing I would reccomend is my fic (yet to be written)! There'll also be an essay about Narnia and gender after sunday, and I'll probably post a link to it here. If you're interested, do keep an eye out for the fic at my journal!
To conclude - Susan rules and I love her as a badass battle queen, gentle ruler, sensible child, and rebellious adult. Hell yeah.

Date: 2011-02-11 05:35 am (UTC)Tohru Honda, Fruits Basket
Date: 2011-02-11 06:35 am (UTC)She's viewed as something of a Canon Sue, a perfect little domestic Pollyanna. Personally, though, I can't help but like her. She goes through so much in her life - both parents are dead, and what few relatives she still has are mostly jerks. That would be enough to give anyone a complex, but she never lets that affect her sunny outlook.
She accepts and cares for everyone she meets, regardless of their background - she doesn't care that her best friends are a goth girl and a former yankii, no more than she cares that her best guy friends just happen to turn into animals when embraced.
Yeah, she's a very domestic sort of girl, but that's nothing to disparage. It's just another way she shows affection to those she cares for. I can also understand her work ethic, as it comes from a desire to not be a burden. Maybe this is just my own small town Midwestern background speaking, but I get her need to feel that she is not a burden upon others and thus show her strength and independence, that notion of "oh, I don't want to be a bother to anyone."
Tohru may never be a tsundere, but she has a gentle, loving strength of character that I feel deserves respect.
Re: Tohru Honda, Fruits Basket
Date: 2011-02-13 01:34 pm (UTC)Punching people min the face or being rude =/= insta strong female character, and Tohru is strong in her own way - which is being nurturing, but also facing things when it's needed. Going up to Kyo when he's in his "true form" despite being really scared, telling him he wasn't alone and accepting him in the end? Yes, she did it. Facing an Akito who was completely in despair, meaning that she was screaming and swinging a knife around, and helping her start to change? Yes, she did it too.
I don't see the supposed "weakness" and "Mary Sue"-dom that haters love to spit around, no.

From:Tess Fontana, Eureka
Date: 2011-02-11 04:00 pm (UTC)Plus, she's an engineer and astrophysicist, with three Ph.D.s. However, unlike 99% of Eureka's scientific community, Tess respects Jack's intelligence enough to explain the science to him. She doesn't dismiss his (or other non-professional scientists') ability to understand, just because he doesn't have advanced degrees. She loves sharing the knowledge she has, and that's a wonderful trait! As Jack puts it, "I love it when you talk nerdy to me."

From:Re: Tess Fontana, Eureka
From:Jack/Subject Zero, Mass Effect (trigger warning for mention of abuse and violence)
Date: 2011-02-11 09:42 pm (UTC)But I love her 'cause:
1) DEM TATTOOS. I'm obsessed with tattoos, so to see a kickass lady who is covered with them from head to toe fills my little heart with glee.
2) SHE'S AN ASS-KICKER. This is a woman who is not afraid to use her own damn hands to beat you into the ground. Though she uses a gun and biotics for tech purposes, in most canon cutscenes you will find her punching the fuck out of people. And robots. And walls. Walls in a space station. But she's Jack, she doesn't give a hoot about SPACE.
3) SHE'S HAD IT ROUGH AND STILL CARRIES ON. Without going into spoilery areas, Jack's been treated like a guinea pig by scientists and criminals all her life. She's had people she cared about completely turn around and use her. And, in one case, someone she really cared about saved her life by giving up his own. And she came out of it with issues. But I like that she did; she's not perfect, she's perfectly aware of her issues though, and accepts them as part of who she is without constantly dramatizing and losing her composure over it. If you choose to romance her as a Male Shepard she takes strides in overcoming them as she realizes that she can trust you. While it's not the best written romance, it has potential and she still comes out of it with some growth while still remaining the awesome lady she is.
4) DAT MOUTH. And I don't mean her lips, I mean she's got a potty mouth and she isn't afraid to say what needs saying. She's in your face, whether you like it or not, and if you choose to mess back... well, you've got dental right?
All in all, a ridiculously awesome chick who gets way, way more hate than she should, and I adore her so.

Kay Faraday, Ace Attorney
Date: 2011-02-12 05:56 am (UTC)Poor Kay. I don't think the fandom's got this upset over a woman since Iris back in T&T.
What I like most about Kay is that she holds to her ideas. She still believes in justice and truth despite the obvious corruption in the world around here, which is especially impressive given her father's murder. She refuses to recantlie about her identity as the Yatagarasu even when it could be her freedom on the line because she made a promise not to lie and she won't deny what she is for the sake of personal convenience. She's confident in the face of despair and persistent against a foe who seems to hold all the cards, a trait shared by most of the Ace Attorney protagonists.
And yes, Kay goes a little overboard with the whole thief persona thing, but I find it charming. It's beyond teenage fantasy--the original Yatagarasu was her father. The pin, the motto, the dramatic gesturing, all of that is specifically to honor the legacy of a man she loved most in the world. And I respect that.
Re: Kay Faraday, Ace Attorney
Date: 2011-02-12 07:55 am (UTC)Iris, Ace Attorney
Date: 2011-02-12 08:06 am (UTC)Yes, I know she lied to Phoenix by impersonating Dahlia for all those months. But thing is, she was trying to SAVE HIS LIFE, and it couldn't have been easy to turn against Dahlia, since she was her twin sister. She was doing her best in a horrible situation, trying to protect the sister she loved and save the life of someone she didn't even knew. It put her at risk too. And then she ends up falling in love with him, which made it even worse. Her confession at the end of 3-5 was heartbreaking, because she had just finally made the tough decision to side with him, and then - Dahlia made the attempt on his life that ended with Doug Swallow dead and herself going to jail. Maybe it wasn't the best thing to do, to not come forward then and explain everything to him... but she meant well, she honestly thought it was better for him. I can't blame her for what she did. I think she's stronger than people give her credit for, and I'm sick of seeing her get slammed by the fanbase because she "came between" Phoenix and Edgeworth or some other such nonsense.
(And on a shallow note, I think she has such a beautiful design, and is cute as hell. It's hard for me to hate someone like that, haha.)

Date: 2011-02-14 07:31 pm (UTC)Desiree DeLite - Ace Attorney
Date: 2011-02-17 04:07 pm (UTC)Desiree 'fast bikes and gentleman thieves' DeLite. I think the major problem people may have with Desiree is that she both exemplifies and subverts a major stereotype (that or she gets in the way of Ron/Luke slash, which is stupid because you can't write good Ron/Luke slash without being problematic even if Desiree has magically poofed into the ether). She's a little ditzy and oblivious, she loves to shop and to the uninformed eye she could appear to be a gold digger. Given April May, Ini Miney Regina Berry, and Larry's streak of girlfriends, we're primed to think she's either a naive bubblehead or a sinister criminal hiding behind a pretty face.
But she's not. The only thing she loves more than fast motorcycles is her husband and she's determined to fight for him. When he's in trouble she immediately hires the best 'no-hope victory-from-jaws-of-defeat' lawyer in the business, and breaks into Atmey's detective agency to steal the urn which will prove her husband's innocence. Yes, the woman who hates criminals, especially robbers breaks the law to rescue her Ronnie without so much as a second thought. I can only assume it involved crashing through a window and kung-fuing her way past the secretary.
Not to mention that (if you present the urn like a good boy) this scene occurs< (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-g6hpxkpt4) (2:00 for relevant portion). She isn't disappointed in Ron and she's not going to break up with him for being poor and resorting to crime to support her shopping habit habit. She loves him for who he is because he loves her and makes her happy in a way far beyond money, and to Desiree that's what's really important. I know that it seems a bit besides the point to demonstrate the virtues of a woman by how she interacts with her male love interest, but I'd say her reaction to his arrest and the way that she interacts with him is what best demonstrates her virtues. Plus it's Ron's case so everything's gotta be about Ron.
One of the things I love about her is she doesn't learn a Very Important Lesson about materialism--she never cared about that to begin with, shopping was just an enjoyable hobby. She stays Desiree. The only thing she really learns is that their relationship could use better communication and to be honest most of that was Ron's fault. She's herself, she's not ashamed of it, and she won't let anyone else shame her for it either.

From:Molly Carpenter, The Dresden Files
Date: 2011-02-19 03:43 am (UTC)I love her. I love how bright and brave and fucked up she is. Personally, I think her relationship to her own beauty/body/sexuality is really difficult and messy and interesting and sad, and I love her for it. I also really love how difficult her relationship with her mother is. I love that her abilities are not inherently suited to combat (as opposed to Harry Dresden, the Great Magical Pyromaniac), and that she thinks her way around her weaknesses, and fights anyway. I like that she repeatedly threw down with Morgan, although she did not do so in a, well, morally acceptable way. (Seriously, he perved on a woman who was probably less than a quarter of his age, while advocating that she be executed. Dehumanization/objectification much? I do not care how good a guy you think he is, Harry! That's fucked up!)
I like that she's done stupid, desperate shit. Probably about 85% of the Dresden Files is people doing stupid, desperate shit. She's in good company!
Basically, I think she is SUPER FANTASTIC, and it makes me sad that fandom apparently doesn't love her as much as I do. ;___;
...okay, back to lurking.

Date: 2011-02-23 04:21 pm (UTC)I know I seem to pick the baddies but... someone's got to love them and Morgause was really mistreated by her family so I can see how she got so.... twisted.
D'Anna Beirs, Battlestar Galactica
Date: 2011-02-23 04:30 pm (UTC).... D'Anna is also played by Lucy Lawless, which doesn't hurt.
Helena Cain, BSG.
Date: 2011-02-23 04:35 pm (UTC)Helena Cain was an admiral guys, in a whole ton of ships she seemed to be the only female admiral for a while and she willingly gave her life up when faced with killing her lover once and for all, cylon or not. I just can't hate her.
Alti & Callisto, X:WP
Date: 2011-02-23 04:43 pm (UTC)In Alti's case she seems to resent Xena leaving her to suffer and yeah, killing her a lot. That's always going to piss someone off. She's also supremely aware of how sexy she is and she uses it in her favour sometimes, she's also smart and aware of what she needs to do to beat Xena, even if she never actually does manage it.
In Callisto's case... well Xena burnt the poor girl's village down, then classed her as the bad guy and frankly didn't seem to want to actually admit her own mistakes, much as I love Xena that made me rage a little. Yes, Callisto is bad and does REALLY horrible things but she's also broken and seeking revenge. I can't blame her even if I wish she had had a chance to be good in her own right.
Niki and Jessica Sanders, Heroes
Date: 2011-03-06 06:21 am (UTC)Conversely, Jessica was a BAMF. She got the job done, and well, but when things got rough and Micah was taken away, she went against her boss and sacrificed money and power for Niki's family.
Best quote: "Everything I did, I did for them." ("Landslide")
Claire Bennet, Heroes
Date: 2011-03-06 06:40 am (UTC)Though Claire kept waffling about whether she wanted to be 'normal' or not, she ultimately accepted her ability and, in the end, used it to demonstrate the presence of people with powers. She paved the way for a brave new world. She faced off against her attackers and took a stand against the psychological and physical abuse she'd suffered because of them - not to mention she took down a super-powered serial killer with a shard of glass. She loved her family and the people she'd become close to in her journey to find herself. The catchphrase for Heroes was, "Save the cheerleader, save the world," and it was true, because she ended up saving the world a couple of times herself.
Best quotes: "The future is not written in stone." ("How to Stop an Exploding Man")
