[identity profile] bofoddity.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

Friends, [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is here again! For me, that means it's time for The Unpopular Woman Love Post.

Personally I'm the kind of fan who always roots for the underdog, and there are many female characters who fill that role, and even more of them fill that role in fandom. This post is for people who want to fan the hell out of their unappreciated women and do it as loud as they can. It works like this:

1. Start a thread and put the character's name and the canon they come from in the subject line.

2. Those who love the character comment on the thread with squee, thoughts, fic/art/vid recs, picspams, essays, links and everything they can think of. Make sure your character gets all the love and the attention she deserves.

3. If a character has a thread and you want to talk about her, comment to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

4. Focus on the love. This is an all positivity, all time post. Embrace your happy!

5. Absolutely no bashing allowed. Please avoid making negative comparisons to other characters, other character types and "well this character sucks more!" kind of comments. Those characters and character types have their fans too and hey, it's a love post. Save negativity for other things.

ETA:
5b. No bashing actresses or the other versions of the character either. Keep in mind that mileages vary and what doesn't work for you may work for someone else.

Susan Pevensie, Narnia

From: [identity profile] delta-mai.livejournal.com
(omg before this there were 2011 comments :D This maketh me happy)

Ok. Susan. I'm putting her here as she was "unpopular" with Lewis himself. I think in fandom, probably because she was so terribly treated by him, she's generally accepted as awesome (but I'm new to Narnia fandom so I may be wrong). In any case, here is why I think she's great, and why I am embarking on an analysis of her and, eventually, a short story. But more about that later.

- She is sensible. This will become her downfall in Lewis' eyes, as she chooses sensible...ness (rationality I guess) over belief (in Prince Caspian she chooses the more sensible route instead of blindly following Lucy's dream of where Aslan wanted them to go). I believe this is also why she loses faith later on - as what sensible (and sane) person still believes in a fantasy world they played in as children (just my interpretation, that she had to deny this to remain sane, but she's still awesome even if you think different).

- She is intelligent.

- She is a brilliant shot with a bow and arrow, I think the best we encounter in all the Narnia books.

- She is brave and will fight if necessary.

- She is gentle and empathetic.

- She is loyal and protective of her family.

- She is beautiful.

- She is aware of who she is.

There are countless other reasons, but I shall leave them to you to list further! I have no reccs as of yet, apart from the awesome fanmix by snacky (here: http://community.livejournal.com/snackbites/5257.html). The only other thing I would reccomend is my fic (yet to be written)! There'll also be an essay about Narnia and gender after sunday, and I'll probably post a link to it here. If you're interested, do keep an eye out for the fic at my journal!

To conclude - Susan rules and I love her as a badass battle queen, gentle ruler, sensible child, and rebellious adult. Hell yeah.

Susan is all of the above! And I like to envision her as a principled nonbeliever, not a silly twit who prefers lipstick and nylons to the important things in life.

Once again, another female character who falls victim to "She sucks because she gets in the way of the slash!" syndrome.

She's viewed as something of a Canon Sue, a perfect little domestic Pollyanna. Personally, though, I can't help but like her. She goes through so much in her life - both parents are dead, and what few relatives she still has are mostly jerks. That would be enough to give anyone a complex, but she never lets that affect her sunny outlook.

She accepts and cares for everyone she meets, regardless of their background - she doesn't care that her best friends are a goth girl and a former yankii, no more than she cares that her best guy friends just happen to turn into animals when embraced.

Yeah, she's a very domestic sort of girl, but that's nothing to disparage. It's just another way she shows affection to those she cares for. I can also understand her work ethic, as it comes from a desire to not be a burden. Maybe this is just my own small town Midwestern background speaking, but I get her need to feel that she is not a burden upon others and thus show her strength and independence, that notion of "oh, I don't want to be a bother to anyone."

Tohru may never be a tsundere, but she has a gentle, loving strength of character that I feel deserves respect.

Tohru! ;A; I've always hated how people screamed MARY SUE at her just because she dared to be nice and kind and girly. There's notning inherently wrong with being either girly or tomboyish, but I hate how if you're a girly girl, lotsa people will immediately claim you're inferior.

Punching people min the face or being rude =/= insta strong female character, and Tohru is strong in her own way - which is being nurturing, but also facing things when it's needed. Going up to Kyo when he's in his "true form" despite being really scared, telling him he wasn't alone and accepting him in the end? Yes, she did it. Facing an Akito who was completely in despair, meaning that she was screaming and swinging a knife around, and helping her start to change? Yes, she did it too.

I don't see the supposed "weakness" and "Mary Sue"-dom that haters love to spit around, no.

Tess Fontana, Eureka

From: [identity profile] gwynevere1.livejournal.com
I love Dr. Tess Fontana. She brings a sense of whimsy into Jack's life that he'd been missing while being Mr. Responsible. She takes pizza to him while he's on stakeout. She invites him on a date to gaze at a meteor shower. She persuades him to kiss her in public. I also love her wit and her banter.

Plus, she's an engineer and astrophysicist, with three Ph.D.s. However, unlike 99% of Eureka's scientific community, Tess respects Jack's intelligence enough to explain the science to him. She doesn't dismiss his (or other non-professional scientists') ability to understand, just because he doesn't have advanced degrees. She loves sharing the knowledge she has, and that's a wonderful trait! As Jack puts it, "I love it when you talk nerdy to me."

I adore Tess. Granted, I'm completely biased because I have such a crush on JRN but I really liked the energy Tess brought to the show and I love that she never looked down on anyone for not being as crazy smart as she was. I wish the writers would've found a reason to keep her around indefinitely.

I've seen Jack get some MASSIVE hate from both male and female fans because she's rude, in your face, a brawler and, supposedly the worst offense to these people, 'mannish'. Which is funny 'considering she has a classic doll face (http://images.wikia.com/masseffect/images/2/29/Jack_Awesome.png).

But I love her 'cause:

1) DEM TATTOOS. I'm obsessed with tattoos, so to see a kickass lady who is covered with them from head to toe fills my little heart with glee.

2) SHE'S AN ASS-KICKER. This is a woman who is not afraid to use her own damn hands to beat you into the ground. Though she uses a gun and biotics for tech purposes, in most canon cutscenes you will find her punching the fuck out of people. And robots. And walls. Walls in a space station. But she's Jack, she doesn't give a hoot about SPACE.

3) SHE'S HAD IT ROUGH AND STILL CARRIES ON. Without going into spoilery areas, Jack's been treated like a guinea pig by scientists and criminals all her life. She's had people she cared about completely turn around and use her. And, in one case, someone she really cared about saved her life by giving up his own. And she came out of it with issues. But I like that she did; she's not perfect, she's perfectly aware of her issues though, and accepts them as part of who she is without constantly dramatizing and losing her composure over it. If you choose to romance her as a Male Shepard she takes strides in overcoming them as she realizes that she can trust you. While it's not the best written romance, it has potential and she still comes out of it with some growth while still remaining the awesome lady she is.

4) DAT MOUTH. And I don't mean her lips, I mean she's got a potty mouth and she isn't afraid to say what needs saying. She's in your face, whether you like it or not, and if you choose to mess back... well, you've got dental right?

All in all, a ridiculously awesome chick who gets way, way more hate than she should, and I adore her so.

Because, really, what's not to love about her? She's smart, funny, a supportive friend, able to get her business up and running in six months, and got refrigerated early because of the biz. She's snarky and great. She deals with a cheating boyfriend and moves on. She and Will were cute, for the few seconds they got.

Judge Magister Drace: Final Fantasy XII

Date: 2011-02-12 05:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ave-machina.livejournal.com
She was one of the judges with the least screen time and no boss fight against her in the US version, but I simply love Drace for being unshakable in her convictions, articulate as all the Judges were, and (for extra nerd points on my part) wearing the heaviest and most well-designed armor out of all of the Magisters. She was a relatively small role in the traditionally grand scope of a Final Fantasy game, but her death was the first one in gaming that ever made me need to put down the controller and collect my thoughts.

Also, if you track down the FFXII manga, she chopped an armored chocobo in half at the Battle of Nabudis. Strong women are the best kind.

Kay Faraday, Ace Attorney

Date: 2011-02-12 05:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com
(I'd appreciate no GK2/AAI2 spoilers in the comments, although I'm sure she's great there too. Unfortunately many of us have to wait on the impressive localization before we can find out.)

Poor Kay. I don't think the fandom's got this upset over a woman since Iris back in T&T.

What I like most about Kay is that she holds to her ideas. She still believes in justice and truth despite the obvious corruption in the world around here, which is especially impressive given her father's murder. She refuses to recantlie about her identity as the Yatagarasu even when it could be her freedom on the line because she made a promise not to lie and she won't deny what she is for the sake of personal convenience. She's confident in the face of despair and persistent against a foe who seems to hold all the cards, a trait shared by most of the Ace Attorney protagonists.

And yes, Kay goes a little overboard with the whole thief persona thing, but I find it charming. It's beyond teenage fantasy--the original Yatagarasu was her father. The pin, the motto, the dramatic gesturing, all of that is specifically to honor the legacy of a man she loved most in the world. And I respect that.

Iris, Ace Attorney

Date: 2011-02-12 08:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] barrelgoddess.livejournal.com
Poor Iris. She's yet another case of a female character who's hated for "getting in the way" of much of the fandom's slash pairing (Phoenix/Edgeworth). It's perfectly fine to like that pairing, but Iris does not deserve the vitriol she gets for being CANONICALLY paired with Phoenix Wright. Especially since the relationship is long over by the time of Trials and Tribulations, for crying out loud.

Yes, I know she lied to Phoenix by impersonating Dahlia for all those months. But thing is, she was trying to SAVE HIS LIFE, and it couldn't have been easy to turn against Dahlia, since she was her twin sister. She was doing her best in a horrible situation, trying to protect the sister she loved and save the life of someone she didn't even knew. It put her at risk too. And then she ends up falling in love with him, which made it even worse. Her confession at the end of 3-5 was heartbreaking, because she had just finally made the tough decision to side with him, and then - Dahlia made the attempt on his life that ended with Doug Swallow dead and herself going to jail. Maybe it wasn't the best thing to do, to not come forward then and explain everything to him... but she meant well, she honestly thought it was better for him. I can't blame her for what she did. I think she's stronger than people give her credit for, and I'm sick of seeing her get slammed by the fanbase because she "came between" Phoenix and Edgeworth or some other such nonsense.

(And on a shallow note, I think she has such a beautiful design, and is cute as hell. It's hard for me to hate someone like that, haha.)

Egeria - mother of the Tok'ra in Stargate SG-1 needs more love! She started an entire movement against the evil Goa'uld - realising their evil after having been born a Goa'uld herself! She is an awesome character who had deserved much better than she got! Only shown in one episode, to be immediately killed after suffering through 50 years of medical experimentation. SHE NEEDS LOVE!

Some pictures of her - I don't have any good ones of her in a host.

Jolinar from Stargate SG-1 needs more love. She is the first Tok'ra we meet, and many people hate her for having taken Sam as host. She ended up giving her life for Sam - and Sam forgave her! The Tok'ra are one of the most important allies of Earth - and they would probably not have met, were it not for Jolinar. She may appear harsh, but she is alone on an alien planet, hunted by an ashrak (assassin) - I think she is tough and badass - and she obviously fight a hard and dangerous fight for good against evil! She is a hero and she deserves to be loved!

Desiree DeLite - Ace Attorney

Date: 2011-02-17 04:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com
[livejournal.com profile] alanahikarichan was going to do this but she got lazy so I'm doing it.

Desiree 'fast bikes and gentleman thieves' DeLite. I think the major problem people may have with Desiree is that she both exemplifies and subverts a major stereotype (that or she gets in the way of Ron/Luke slash, which is stupid because you can't write good Ron/Luke slash without being problematic even if Desiree has magically poofed into the ether). She's a little ditzy and oblivious, she loves to shop and to the uninformed eye she could appear to be a gold digger. Given April May, Ini Miney Regina Berry, and Larry's streak of girlfriends, we're primed to think she's either a naive bubblehead or a sinister criminal hiding behind a pretty face.

But she's not. The only thing she loves more than fast motorcycles is her husband and she's determined to fight for him. When he's in trouble she immediately hires the best 'no-hope victory-from-jaws-of-defeat' lawyer in the business, and breaks into Atmey's detective agency to steal the urn which will prove her husband's innocence. Yes, the woman who hates criminals, especially robbers breaks the law to rescue her Ronnie without so much as a second thought. I can only assume it involved crashing through a window and kung-fuing her way past the secretary.

Not to mention that (if you present the urn like a good boy) this scene occurs< (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-g6hpxkpt4) (2:00 for relevant portion). She isn't disappointed in Ron and she's not going to break up with him for being poor and resorting to crime to support her shopping habit habit. She loves him for who he is because he loves her and makes her happy in a way far beyond money, and to Desiree that's what's really important. I know that it seems a bit besides the point to demonstrate the virtues of a woman by how she interacts with her male love interest, but I'd say her reaction to his arrest and the way that she interacts with him is what best demonstrates her virtues. Plus it's Ron's case so everything's gotta be about Ron.

One of the things I love about her is she doesn't learn a Very Important Lesson about materialism--she never cared about that to begin with, shopping was just an enjoyable hobby. She stays Desiree. The only thing she really learns is that their relationship could use better communication and to be honest most of that was Ron's fault. She's herself, she's not ashamed of it, and she won't let anyone else shame her for it either.

I think in terms of the show and its large cast Hoshi seemed to either get overlooked or not get as much screen time as the other characters. I'm not certain if that's the case in fandom but I'd like to see what other folks think about her.

I love her. I love how bright and brave and fucked up she is. Personally, I think her relationship to her own beauty/body/sexuality is really difficult and messy and interesting and sad, and I love her for it. I also really love how difficult her relationship with her mother is. I love that her abilities are not inherently suited to combat (as opposed to Harry Dresden, the Great Magical Pyromaniac), and that she thinks her way around her weaknesses, and fights anyway. I like that she repeatedly threw down with Morgan, although she did not do so in a, well, morally acceptable way. (Seriously, he perved on a woman who was probably less than a quarter of his age, while advocating that she be executed. Dehumanization/objectification much? I do not care how good a guy you think he is, Harry! That's fucked up!)

I like that she's done stupid, desperate shit. Probably about 85% of the Dresden Files is people doing stupid, desperate shit. She's in good company!

Basically, I think she is SUPER FANTASTIC, and it makes me sad that fandom apparently doesn't love her as much as I do. ;___;

...okay, back to lurking.

I adore Molly! :D I loved her from the first time we saw her, when she was a rebellious young teen, and I was delighted that she became a major character later on. I love that she's got her own unique style and isn't ashamed to show it, and that she's not 100% good guy but she's trying. A lot of long-running series don't seem to be capable of making the children of the main characters into unique and interesting individuals as adults, and Molly is SUCH a departure from that; she's obviously Michael and Charity's child -- you can see both her parents in her -- but she's her own personality as well. I've loved watching her grow up over the course of the books.

I love Victoria. She's brave, even when being kidnapped by various monsters, she is a good friend, she deals with change well, she's good at clever and resource things and most importantly, stays true to herself.

However, most of these good qualities get overlooked because it's "easier" to say things such as "she screams too much" or "she's useless." because the time she came from.

Poor Victoria.

Okay, so I know some of you are going 'but she's baaaad'... yes, she is. Isn't that great? She's witty, smart, snarky as all hell and she's not afraid to be herself. I know she's technically a little bad and mean but... I see so much good to her too. Like saving Claudia.... well, sort of saving her anyway.

Morgause, Merlin.

Yep, another baddy. She's so right though to hate Uther. I love her entire relationship with Morgana because she shows what it is to be completely held in disregard by family and besides which, she's slightly hard to hate when you consider everything that happens to her in the series, not least that death.

I know I seem to pick the baddies but... someone's got to love them and Morgause was really mistreated by her family so I can see how she got so.... twisted.

Okay, yes... D'Anna is sorta an edge-cylon I get that. She's also a reporter with the guts to just go ahead and report even when President Laura Roslin (who I also love) tried to stop her. She's not in anyone's way, she gets involved with both Gaius (NUTTER! I love him too) and Caprica-Six (Or head!six... or both I can't remember). She's impatient and moody and slightly shitty with the whole 'play nice' thing... but I love how she is. She's the most real of the cylons for me because she never really thought of herself as a Cylon.

.... D'Anna is also played by Lucy Lawless, which doesn't hurt.

Helena Cain, BSG.

Yeah, okay she was only around for one real episode.... I know. She was also kind of a bitch, hard-ass and she blew some poor boy away for not doing as she said... she's also extremely sexy, a lesbian (always gets bonus points from me) and she's not afraid to fry a bitch if it comes to it. Helena is probably the most broken bad-guy in BSG and yet she's also incredibly strong. She has emotions and yes, she does do A LOT of really bad things but she was betrayed by the one person she trusted. I really, really can't blame her. Even if I wish canon hadn't been such a bitch to her.

Helena Cain was an admiral guys, in a whole ton of ships she seemed to be the only female admiral for a while and she willingly gave her life up when faced with killing her lover once and for all, cylon or not. I just can't hate her.

Alti & Callisto, X:WP

From: [identity profile] femme-slash-fan.livejournal.com
Mkay, so I lumped these two in together for one reason... They are the most underloved baddies I have ever seen. Alti and Callisto were both pretty broken by the past as far as I could tell and well, they were both slightly nuts.

In Alti's case she seems to resent Xena leaving her to suffer and yeah, killing her a lot. That's always going to piss someone off. She's also supremely aware of how sexy she is and she uses it in her favour sometimes, she's also smart and aware of what she needs to do to beat Xena, even if she never actually does manage it.

In Callisto's case... well Xena burnt the poor girl's village down, then classed her as the bad guy and frankly didn't seem to want to actually admit her own mistakes, much as I love Xena that made me rage a little. Yes, Callisto is bad and does REALLY horrible things but she's also broken and seeking revenge. I can't blame her even if I wish she had had a chance to be good in her own right.

Niki and Jessica Sanders, Heroes

From: [identity profile] angary.livejournal.com
Niki supported and raised her kid while her husband was in jail. She fought with her agressive multiple personality and won. Despite all the bad things her other half did, she tried to make a better life for her family, and even though that backfired, she died saving a family member. She was a true hero.

Conversely, Jessica was a BAMF. She got the job done, and well, but when things got rough and Micah was taken away, she went against her boss and sacrificed money and power for Niki's family.

Claire Bennet, Heroes

Pretty much all the characters had great arcs in Season 1, but Claire Bennet arguably had the best. She (understandably) struggled with her power while she was trying to live a normal life in high school, and when she was almost raped - then found out the asshole had gotten away with it before - she used her power to get back at him. She sought out her biological mother, yet still loved and appreciated her parents. She refused to believe in destiny, she was the reason Noah Bennet turned his back on The Company, and she was the one who goaded Nathan Petrelli to sacrifice himself and fly his brother out of Kirby Plaza before he exploded.

Though Claire kept waffling about whether she wanted to be 'normal' or not, she ultimately accepted her ability and, in the end, used it to demonstrate the presence of people with powers. She paved the way for a brave new world. She faced off against her attackers and took a stand against the psychological and physical abuse she'd suffered because of them - not to mention she took down a super-powered serial killer with a shard of glass. She loved her family and the people she'd become close to in her journey to find herself. The catchphrase for Heroes was, "Save the cheerleader, save the world," and it was true, because she ended up saving the world a couple of times herself.

Best quotes: "The future is not written in stone." ("How to Stop an Exploding Man")

"I've died before. It's no big deal." ("Fallout")

Monica, Heroes

From: [identity profile] angary.livejournal.com
Monica was one of the most underrated characters in the series, IMO. She was a driven, bright young woman who was struggling to get by and achieve success in a time and place that was still trying to heal, and when she manifested her abilities, she wanted to use them for good, to fight crime and become a superhero. I still lament her disappearance from the main canon and wish we could've gotten a St. Joan storyline during S3, but from what I've read in the comics, she continued to fight the good fight and live up to her namesake.

Best quote:

"It's all about attitude, Camille."

"What's about attitude?"

"Life. And today is the first day of the rest of mine." ("The Kindness of Strangers")
