Here's a look at 3 women who are protected by or protective of their siblings.

BROTHERLY LOVE (The Godfather, Connie Corleone Rizzi)

She looked at the clock. He was late. It shouldn’t have worried her, but still…

Her first memory was of him, putting a bandage on her arm where the cat had scratched her. She had wailed like a banshee at the first sting of those claws. Her brother had held her and spoke to her in soothing tones.

“It’s okay. It’s okay, Connie. I’ll make it better.” He pressed the bandage against her skin. “Look. No more scratches. They’re all gone. You’re all better.”

She thought of a time years later, when she was twelve and Poppa had caught her with a cigarette.

“That’s mine, Pop,” her brother said, taking the cigarette from her hand.

She breathed a shaky sigh of relief when her father walked away and then her brother laid into her. “No more of this until you’re older, hear?”

Then a few years after that, when he scrutinized the boys who came to take her out on dates. He’d pass judgment on her outfits as well. “Go back upstairs and change,” he’d say, in a tone that would brook no argument.

She didn’t care. She shouted at him anyway. “You want me to look like a nun!”

“I want you to act like a nun. At least ‘til you’re married.”

The phone rang, jarring her from her thoughts.

In the same moment, Carlo walked through the front door. “You going to get that?”

She didn’t have to. She knew that Santino wouldn’t be coming to her rescue and nothing would ever be better again.

TOUCHSTONE (Firefly, River Tam)

They went into her head. They poked, prodded and manipulated in order to turn her into the type of weapon they wanted. They twisted her, took her childhood, made her feel that she was no longer a girl.

For all their work, they couldn’t excise the one part of her that would have made her theirs forever. She was Simon’s sister. It was a touchstone, a part she’d buried so deep that the Alliance couldn’t reach it. They knew she had family, of course. That was well-documented, but they didn’t know the depth of the commitment the two siblings had to each other.

Simon would recognize the message when he received it. It was just a matter of time before he came for her. One day, she’d make it up to him. She didn’t know how, but she knew that when her turn came, she would.

DIARY ENTRY OF AN INVISIBLE GIRL (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawn Summers)

This is bullshit. Here I am stuck in bed at ten o’clock on a Saturday night and Buffy is still out running around. I know she has a boyfriend. I actually heard them whispering together one night when she was supposed to be asleep. And not on the phone either. He was in the house. In her room!!! I should tell Mom but it’s easier to hold it against Buffy and get her to do stuff. Mom doesn’t seem to care that she’s out all hours. She just says that Buffy’s busy at school. Ha! Busy at school. Right. Making time with the boyfriend no doubt. And he actually seems like a bit of an asshole. She gets bruised a lot and she’s not clumsy. I should threaten to call the police on him. I wonder if that would have an effect. Probably not. She doesn’t pay a lot of attention where he’s concerned, barely pays attention to anything I say at all. Sometimes I think I’m invisible.

Awesome Dawn fic - you really captured her voice and I ADORE the dramatic irony and poigancy of the final sentence! Oh Dawn, what an epic character.
