Summary: When the curse is broken, and Sneezy crosses the town boundary losing his memory, Regina finds the idea of losing the memories of her pain tempting for a moment.
In that moment when the dwarves had come running back into the town, saying Sneezy had attempted to cross the town boundary and had lost all memories of his original life as Sneezy and only remembered being Tom Clark, Regina wondered what it would have been like had she been subject to the same part of the curse herself, if she had the option to lose all her own memories.
Of course, it had never been an option for her; she had always intended to be the only one who remembered anything at all, the only one to know the curse they were all under. The memory loss had been a failsafe, a way to keep them all under control in the event of the breaking of the curse; if she was honest, a part of her had rather liked the idea of David being the one it happened to, taking him from Snow all over again (not that that would have ever made up for Snow taking Daniel from Regina).
But as Regina saw what had happened to Sneezy, for a moment the idea of the same thing happening to her if she crossed the town line began to seem appealing in a way. If Regina no longer had her memories of her former life, she wouldn’t have to wake from the recurring nightmare of Daniel’s death playing out before her every day. She wouldn’t have to deal with the pain of Henry’s rejection as he turned his back on her, making the choice to stay with his grandfather, if she no longer remembered she had a son.
