Recs: SPN (Ellen Harvelle, gen and het fic)
Howdy. Today I've gathered a selection of het and gen stories centered around Ellen Harvelle of Supernatural.
Gen
Back of the Garden, by
cofax7 - 900 words, PG, spoilers for AHBL2.
A short but (imo) comforting piece where little is actually said. And written for me, which only one of the reasons I like it so well.
The Johns and the Janes, by
impertinence, approx 200 words, PG, no spoilers.
Another short one, and not as comforting, but which opens a window on Ellen's core of resillence.
Even The Sun's Got A Price On It, by
coffee_in_bed, 1200 words, PG, spoilers for AHBL2.
coffee_in_bed's presentation of Ellen is among the best out there in fandom, imo. Here she gives a bit of Bobby and Ellen, waiting for the shooting to start again.
We Looked Like Giants, by
xaara. 4.5k words, PG, spoilers for 'No Exit'.
A vivid trace of Ellen's life. I think I love most that this story is about Ellen, and not Ellen/someone - just the woman, and the days she has seen.
Toy Soldiers, by
ignipes - PG, 2.5K, spoilers for AHBL2.
Another story with Bobby - two old soldiers look at the Winchester boys, and remember how the brothers became who they are.
Ellie by
musesfool, PG, 325 words, no spoilers.
A very short piece about becoming who you are, and making your own name.
Dean/Ellen
The Humid Press of Days, by
minim_calibre. 1k, R, post-series, spoilers for "Born Under A Bad Sign".
Both gorgious and gut-wrenching. Min does some very cool things here with the themes of stains and tears.
And In My Hour of Darkness, by
monimala, R, 825 words, spoilers through AHBL2.
An oddity among the Dean/Ellen fics that I've read - this one actually ends on a hopefulnote.
Death: A Triptych, by
lunabee34, Adult/R, 825 words, spoilers through AHBL2.
A set of three brief evocative scenes that meld together. Ellen is actually a secondary character here, but I love the writing in this piece too much not to rec it.
Knife Marks on Old Wood Furniture, by
saeva and
verstehen - R, 8k words, post AHBL2.
Dean and Ellen spend time in the same place, both of them figuring out how to keep on going. Exceptionally strong writing in a story that focuses on the characters and not the pairing.
Out of Your Half-Remembered Dreams, by
ficwriter1966, R, 3.6k words, set post AHBL2.
This is a story much in the same theme as Knife Marks (above), and with an Ellen characterization that is not quite as vivid. However, the Ellen voice remains strong and there is great Sam and Bobby presence as well.
Sam/Ellen
Walk With Me A While Across The Sand, by
flipmontigirl - NC-17, 2.6k words, no real spoilers.
This is the third of
flipmontigirl's Sam/Ellen stories, (links to the other on this page) and, I think, has the strongest Ellen characterization. (This isn't a pairing that I can get my head around easily, but there are several talented fans writing this pairing.)
My Sorrows Learned to Swim, by
coffee_in_bed - R, 5k words, spoilers for "No Exit" (I think).
A slow, sure, *considered* approach to the pairing - again, focusing far more on the characters than the bed-hopping. One of my favorites of
coffee_in_bed's stories. Ends more upbeat than a number of the stories on this page.
Other het pairings
Restlessly Abandoned Homes - by
coffee_in_bed - R, 1k words, spoilers through 'No Exit' (I think)
Ending with a shorter piece that - despite the multitude of relationships included within, both overt and subtext - keeping coming back to Ellen, who she is and where she stands.

I hope people enjoyed these stories - but if you have others you would like to add to the list, please feel free to drop a comment with recs.
