Day 4 - Fic - Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Faith Lehane and Joyce Summers

Title: Dinner with Mom
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters: Faith Lehane and Joyce Summers
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 662
Summary: Added scene during "Who Are You?". After the body swap with Buffy, Faith doesn't run out to see the Scoobies right away. Instead, she opts to have dinner with Joyce and gives them both something that they need.

When she's done with her bath, which felt like such a luxury, and has arranged for her way out of Sunnydale, Faith dresses and goes downstairs. “Hey, mom,” she says, the word sounding so strange to her ears. “Can I stay for dinner?”

Joyce looks surprised for a moment and then delighted. “You don't have plans?”

“Patrolling, but I can do that later. I just-”

Joyce flashes an understanding smile. “You've been through a lot today. I've got a steak I was saving for a special occasion.”

Prodigal daughter returns home so you kill the fatted calf. How stereotypical, thinks Faith, but there's no way she's going to turn her nose up at a steak dinner.

“Can I help?”

“You can set the table while I get dinner ready.”

Faith nods and heads into the kitchen, opening up a cabinet to reveal different boxes of food from cereal to pasta.

“Can you hand me the penne when you're up there? We can have that as a side with some broccoli.”

“Sounds great,” Faith says, handing the box to her.

She opens another cabinet which holds wraps and paper products. She grabs a couple of paper napkins and goes to put them on the table. She's surprised Joyce has not caught on yet.

She's getting better odds on finding a cabinet that holds some plates, but there are still too many of them. She opens a door and sees various kitchen appliances- how much do they really need anyway? Faith grew up with a stove and a refrigerator. No blenders or food processors or whatever that weird little gadget in the corner was.

“Did you move the plates?” Faith asks.

“No, they're above the sink where they've always been. You haven't been gone long enough for me to rearrange things,” Joyce says.

“Right.” She pulled open the cabinet and thankfully found both plates and glasses.

“Let me get out of your way so you can get the silverware.”

“Thanks.”

Faith finishes setting the table then returns to the kitchen. “How's work?” she asks.

Joyce starts some rambling story about a piece of art that she's been trying to acquire for the gallery. Faith had no idea what she did, but now realizes why the house is decorated in the way that it is with all the weird statues here and there. She nods and says “Uh-huh” a lot and since Joyce doesn't comment on the lack of a back and forth, Faith guesses that Buffy must find her mom's work boring as hell too.

Still, it's nice hearing someone talking to her that isn't angry or judgmental, so she'll take it.

They sit down at the table. Faith stares at the plate of food for a longer than acceptable time.

“Not quite what you're used to at the dorm?” Joyce asks.

“Something like that. I've just missed your cooking,” Faith answers.

Joyce smiles. “Well, you know you can come home at any time.”

Faith realizes that Joyce needs this as much as she does and squelches down the sudden urge to flee. She takes a bite of the steak, enjoying the taste of it, and it seems to ground her. She doesn't know when she'll get another meal like this, so she might as well take advantage while she can.

When dinner is over, she helps Joyce clear the table. Faith takes one last look around the house. “I'd better go,” she says. “So many vamps, so little time.”

“Be careful,” says Joyce, following her to the door.

“I will,” Faith says. She is momentarily surprised when Joyce wraps her in an embrace. It's weird, but she soon finds herself hugging Joyce back.

“Thanks. For everything,” she mumbles as she walks out of the Summers house. She'll go patrol for a while and maybe when she's done with that she'll look up that boyfriend of Buffy's for a little fun before heading out of Sunnydale for good.

It'll be a night to remember.

This is so moving! It's been forever since I watched BTVS, but I love this little "might have been". So interesting that she and Joyce both needed a moment like this for different reasons.
