Day 6, Secrets and Lies, fic, Elite
Title: So He Is Dead
Fandom: Elite

Summary: So, Raul's dead, and Sara's secret involvement in Ivan's accident has died with him...or so she thinks.
So he is dead; Sara is free both from Raul and from the fear of her secret being exposed.
She’d asked herself so many times which would be the worse prison, a life with the controlling Raul or the real prison she would face if Ivan ever remembered that she, and not Mencia, had been driving the car the night of his hit and run. And so far, it was actually looking like Sara was going to be free of both; the time she’d tried broaching the subject carefully with Ivan, he’d said he couldn’t remember anything about the accident, and even though Raul could have exposed her at any time after they separated, he’d never done so.
Now her secret has died with Raul; Sara still thinks there’s something odd about that, because even though the official story was that he’d jumped, that wasn’t the Raul she knew. But she’s not going to rock that boat; he’s gone, and if they did decide to look any further into his death, well, even without knowing about his cover up of her crime, the circumstances of their breakup were sufficiently public that she would be considered to have had a motive anyway. Sara’s only just beginning to feel like she doesn’t need to look over her shoulder waiting to be called in for Ivan’s accident; the last thing she needs is questioning over a crime she didn’t commit. If they look too hard at her, they might end up finding out about the one she did.
And Mencia…Sara won’t think about her. Mencia was trying to help Sara escape Raul, and in return Sara had trapped Mencia in the life with her father that she hadn’t wanted, allowing her to continue to believe that she was driving. Mencia also hadn’t remembered the accident; Sara could only hope that the change of scenery, living miles away from where it had happened, would keep any memories from resurfacing.
As it turned out, it wasn’t Mencia Sara needed to fear; it was Ivan who had flashed back to that night after all, remembered Sara behind the wheel, and on hearing this, his mother had thrown out some suggestions to the police about Sara and Raul’s breakup, causing Sara to become a person of interest in Raul’s death too.
It’s a relief at this point to confess about Ivan, to let go of the secrets and lies, but now she finds herself under suspicion for a crime she hadn’t committed, just as Mencia had been forced to live with guilt that was not hers, justice has been served to Sara in more ways than one.
