There would always be those who doubted the purpose of exploration.

Uhura listened to the dissension raised in the most recent meeting of the Federation's governing body. She shook her head at the recordings of so many who questioned why resources were being poured into yet a larger class of starships meant to fill in the holes of the studies made by the Enterprise and her sister ships.

She wished people could see the benefits of all the science, innovation, and cultural exchanges the way she did. These were not adventures for fun.

The missions helped build a better future.

“There.” Faith pointed at a dot on the map.

“What’s that?” Buffy asked. “Another Hellmouth?”

“It’s Nebraska.”

“What’s in Nebraska? Besides corn and… more corn.”

“Let me look it up.” She tapped a few buttons on her phone. “Lexington, Nebraska- Home of the Museum of Military Vehicles.”

“We don’t need a tank.”

“No. What we need is a vacation. We’ve got all these Potentials running around that need some experience. Giles has said that he needs to get them out in the field. Might as well let the little birdies fly and jump in the car and head to Lexington.”

“Can’t we do something fun? Like go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?”

“You’ve been there a dozen times. They know your name.”

“That’s just because Buffy isn’t very common out here.”

“I need to get outta Cleveland, B.”

“What if something happens to the-?”

“Did anybody worry about us when we were called? No, we were handed a stake and told ‘Good luck, kid. Don’t worry if you die because someone will be along to take your place.’ You’ve got to quit being the den mother to these girls and just go out and live your life. We deserve this.”

“You’re right. We do. Can we go to Chicago?”

“Let’s just see where the road takes us.”
