I have been revising this story since last July, when I posted the first section in response to a challenge in the late, lamented

xf_redux. I have finally finished it. This is about Dana Scully, at the very beginning of her partnership with Fox Mulder. It attempts to bring together many elements of her backstory, and to provide an explanation for why she chose to stay in what must have seemed to her a difficult and frustrating assignment. My thanks to

emily_shore, for her detailed, intelligent comments, and her enthusiasm for this project. It is a much better story as a result of her input. I must also thank my husband Kyle, for his loving encouragement, and his invaluable editing skills. Any mistakes that remain are my own.

Length: I don't honestly know, maybe around 9,500? My kung-fu is the worst. It is rather loosely divided into chapters. There are two in Part One, and three in Part Two. It just worked out that way.
Summary: It is early season one. As Scully struggles to understand her brilliant erratic partner, and adjust to her new role as a field agent, she begins to have nightmares. They take place in a basement.
