Quick, there are awesome women on TV and you need to watch them! These are my top eight women, plus several honorable mentions, in my TV watching life thus far. They're brilliant, y'all. I think you should get to know them.

Fandoms: All My Children, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Grey's Anatomy, Homicide: Life on the Street, Saving Grace, West Wing, Wire in the Blood

(seriously, it's important...)

I thought I’d make the next five female character into a theme and talk about the women screwed by canon- even if I’m not doing the thematic 30 Days of Awesome Ladies that I’ve seen circulating. Mind you, these are women who were screwed by canon but who I still adore despite their late addition warts. Also, while I may have issues with the futures of some of the other women on my list (**cough CJ Cregg, Hermione Granger, Dagny Taggart and Lilah Morgan**) or stupid-ass creative decisions (**Dana Whitaker and Kaylee Frye**), these following women have more serious degeneration problems. I completely adore all of them and celebrating them is a big part of my posts. However, I can’t talk seriously about them without their writer-induced degeneration playing a big role.

This will be in two phases because I have a lot to say which goes from I have so much to say that I can't say it right now to I've got to read about agriculture and you're not with me and go to hell. That's a hint for a character on this list, btw!

For now, Abbey Bartlet, Jo March and Willow Rosenberg )

I've been admiring the 30 days of Female Characters posts. I know I'm a little late to the party but I thought I'd post five women a day to write about all of my favorite female characters in books, movies and TV before this event ends. I'm also not a big sci fi genre person although I'm open to it. So most of my favorite female characters are kind of underrepresented in this journal.

CJ Cregg, Erin Brockovich, Elizabeth Bennet, Peggy Olson and Scout Finch )

Hi there! I took advantage of the 30 Days of Female Characters meme that was going around, only I wasn't really up for all 30 days so I wound up combining it into one picspam. If you'd like to check it out, it's here on my journal!

In November, I did a 30 Days of Awesome Women meme (though I cheated and did 32 days), with a post a day about my favorite female characters, including a little discussion about each, pics and recs. Here are links to all the posts.

One of the reason I love The West Wing is because it is chock full of incredible, independent, beautiful women who revel in their femininity while putting their would-be alpha male peers in their place when the need arises. So for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, I decided to dust off the PS skillz and celebrate these wonderful, wonderful women. Aaaaaand I'm getting it in JUST in the nick of time.

Icons are in alphabetical order according to character.

Enjoy.

I've been wanting to look back at the shows with strong women characters which influenced me growing up (and which still do), so here they are. Photos are taken from wherever. I'm really sorry about not giving credit, I've just never done this before and some of these have been wandering around my hard drive for years. There are minor spoilers for Star Trek TNG and DS9, Earth: Final Conflict, Babylon 5, Firefly, Stargate: SG-1, West Wing, The X-Files, Criminal Minds, and The Wire.

To put this in perspective, I turn twenty-four this year (2009). I started watching Star Trek from about age seven or eight, then Earth: Final Conflict and X-Files around ten or eleven, Babylon 5 in early teens, and the rest spread out until all of Stargate in one long marathon this past summer and Criminal Minds and The Wire now. These ladies have really made an impact on who I turned into because I had few other strong female role models around me as a kid and teen. Certainly none in the trades, the active military, or aviation.

Cut for photos and commentary. )

I'd wanted to do a new story (or two) for the challenge, but I'm not sure it'll be done by midnight tomorrow. I'll manage the time better next year. :) In the meantime, here are my previous stories about women:

I made several Keller icons from 4x16, "Trio," because she looked so darn pretty, and then I went through my "to be posted" folder and added a bunch more icons from various sources for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon -- so yay, women!

[10-14] Kristen Bell
[15-20] Friday Night Lights
[21-23] 30 Rock
[24] The West Wing

As usual, comment, credit, no hotlinking, textless icons are not bases. :)

New fic:

I was already working on this before, but it was [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon that prompted me to finish it. It's a Friday Night Lights story, about Tyra Collette during and just after her first semester at college. It's called "Chains and Fetters," and the details and the link are over in my journal.

Old fic:

1. Another FNL story about Tami and Julie Taylor, set at the hometown homecoming game in 2013, "Sun of a New Season."

2. A West Wing story that follows CJ through the years and through some of the significant moments in her relationship with Toby, "Flight Path." It's a CJ/Toby story, but it's very much about CJ.

3. A story called "All the Running You Can Do," written about Audrey Flankman in the short-lived CBC political drama "Snakes and Ladders." Nobody saw this show, which is a damn shame, because I'm still convinced that Audrey Flankman is the best female character ever to grace the small screen. The story is set a few years before the show, when Audrey (now a cabinet minister in the Canadian federal government) was first running for office. If that's your sort of thing, go ahead and read the story even if you don't know the show; it's pre-show, after all, and pretty removed from the action of the source text anyway. (And if you fall in love with Audrey too, I might be able to get you copies of the six episodes that were made. *g*)

I'm a mod of [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection, a multifandom community for meta essays about characters people like and want to introduce to other fans. Behind the cut, links to 31 essays posted there about female characters in 14 fandoms, many including fanfic recs and links to character-centric communities:

lots and lots of shiny here )

Also, if you'd be interested in sharing your love for a favorite character, feel free to check out the claims list and consider writing an essay of your own; we've got far fewer essays about female characters than male characters, and I'd love to see more women represented. (Anybody for Teyla? Ginny Weasley? Barbara Gordon? Laura Roslin? Martha Jones? All currently up for grabs.)
